MATTE GUSTAFSSON - HEAVY FEATHER

💿 Hi, it’s a pleasure for us to have on Hardrockheavymetal MATTE GUSTAFSSON of HEAVY FEATHER.

Can you introduce us the current line-up of the band?

Matte Gustafsson – Guitar & Vocals

Lisa Lystam – Vocals & Harmonica

Morgan Korsmoe – Bass & Vocals

Ola Göransson Wedin – Drums & Vocals

💿 On April 9th will be out your new album MOUNTAIN OF SUGAR, positive received on our pages. Can you tell us somethin'about its composition process and style?

(MATTE) We started the process in fall 2019 with me recorded demos here in Stockholm, then Lisa wrote her lyrics to it and then we rehearsed it a few weeks before we hit the studio.

Quite fast way to work and it absolutely worked out. The album was recorded more like a studio album does these days, still the live feeling but more carefully recorded. We had the time to test things, experiment and try different costumes on some songs. We recorded 13 songs and 11 of them are on the LP.

Short songs, no transport distances. I like that, and then you can stretch the songs when you play it live.

I also think the sound is harder than the first one, in a good way!

💿 In your early times which artists influenced you the most?

(MATTE) For me personally and also the others in the band, the 60's rock scene both British and American were a huge inspiration. Bands like Cream, Free, Allman Brothers and Mountain, just before it became heavy metal.

But of course we'll listen to more stuff than that.

Blues and Soul music and of course we listen to Black Sabbath.

💿 Where does the band name come from?

(MATTE) It was Ola's wife who came up with that name after a while, some kind of homage to Led Zeppelin or Iron Butterfly. It's maybe a meaning of both heavy riffs and feather light ballads.

It's hard to find a good band name but we all are proud and comfortable with this one.

💿 Also MOUNTAIN OF SUGAR will be out on THE SIGN RECORDS. Can you tell us somethin'about relationships with them?

(MATTE) It felt natural to work with The Sign when we were on our way to release our first album.

I also been working with them earlier when I was playing with Siena Root and they are really good guys. They have the heart in the right place and releases lots of cool, new and inspiring bands.

Perfect choice for us and they are doing a great job!

💿 Here at HARDROCKHEAVYMETAL we are strong defenders of classic format. Love for vintage or isn't there a future outside digital?

(MATTE) Of course, classic old school rock will always survive. These days this kind of music culture is really old and I think it's stronger than in many years.

But you have to develop it too, do it your own way. You cannot just follow "rules" and do it exactly the same way as the previous ones.

Hopefully we help to keep it alive.

💿 In absence of live music many bands provides streaming concerts.. You agree or disagree? What's your opinion about?

(MATTE) I think streamed concerts are a good complement in a way but it's of course very hard to get it interesting.

I think it have to be cosy and familiar.

Not like those you pretend it's a real live concert with audience. Then you can watch a live DVD as well.

It has to catch people like they are in the same room.

We're going to have a streamed concert 2nd may. Like a virtual release concert.

We will play the whole album live in the studio and maybe talk a little bit about the record, simply more than just a streamed live show. Looking forward to that!

💿 Thank you so much for your time. See you soon on Hardrockheavymetal!
