JONAS - FLIGHT

💿 Hi, it's a pleasure for us to have on Hardrockheavymetal JONAS of FLIGHT. Welcome!! Hi. Thanks for the interest! 💿 Can you tell us somethin'about your early days of your career? When is this all begun and which bands have influenced you? We started up in 2012 as a three-piece. Christoffer on guitar, myself on bass and Herman on drums. We were playing together in various other bands, but had a lot of ideas and inspiration we didn't feel fitting there, so we decided to start Flight. It was started on the initiative of Christoffer who called up both Herman and I on the phone one day.

He'd made a riff he was really happy with (the main riff of Don't Lose It) and wanted us to come and make something out of it. 

That was the start. A couple of months later we had most of the material on the debut written. Kristian joined in on second guitar in early 2013. 

During the summer of 2013 we decided that Christoffer had to learn to sing, as we couldn't find a fitting vocalist.

So we recorded a demo (unreleased) with most of the songs from the debut that we send around to a couple of people in search of someone to release our to-be-recorded debut. 

Our main influences in the beginning was Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, Motörhead and stuff like that. 

Your typical thing. Of course we were also listening to different genres and albums that would influence us further in the future, but those bands were the main ones in our early days. 💿 Your new album "A LEAP THROUGH MATTER" is out for a few days! Can you tell us somethin' about its composition process? We're really impressed about that! A really fancy platter! Thank you! Christoffer had a lot of material that was written way back in 2012, so we already had quite a bit to work with when we started the process of the new album.

My songs were written after the debut was recorded (but way before it was released). I get anxious if I have completed material for future releases while we're working on something else, like if I have finished songs that can't be used yet, so I prefer to do my writing in steps, it's not a continous process for me, as it seems like it is for Christoffer. Something that puts the new album apart from the first one is that we've had different side projects and evolved as musicians. 

New imputs, different approaches and so on.

 I would say we'd become better musicians. We worked more thoroughly with the material with a "kill your darlings" approach and spent more time working on the arrangements. 

Making them a bit less straight forward. 

The structures are more linear. All in all it's been a much more thoughtful process the whole way, from phrasing of riffs, to having a quite clear picture on how the production was gonna be. 💿 The real "news" in music industry is the return of vinyl; What's your feeling about this classic format and the current music "business"? Vinyl is the best, if it wasn't we would spend a bunch of money on having Adam Burke make the amazing cover art. It's ment for the LP format. Although, for an eventual re-press of «A Leap Through Matter», I hope we can do a gatefold, as the painting is a continous picture from backside to the front side.

 Also, playing music on a record player makes you more of an active listener I think. 

That being said, 90% of the music I listen to throughout my day is digital, whether it's through Spotify og Bandcamp. It's just very handy. 

The business model of Spotify in the likes is a mess though. 

There's no money in it for the smaller bands. 

You just have to think about it as a channel of promotion, having your material available within a few click for the whole world. I do hope they sort it out though. 💿 Can you tell us somethin'about your next live projects? Nothing as of yet. The new material isn't written to be performed live, really. We know how it will sound just from rehearsing the songs, and the soundscape is a bit flatter. We worked a lot with layering riffs and vocals, and it's just not doable for a four-piece band to perform (most of) the songs the way me madet hem. This has been a conscious choice though. We feel it's more important to make the songs as good as possible, and not compromise the compositions just for the sake of playing them before a crowd. We might do a couple of shows here and there, but we will not do a tour.

💿 We love the cover of cover of ALTM. Can you tell us somethin' about? Thank you. I'd been a fan of Adam Bruke's work for a long time. So when were putting the final touches on the new material in rehearsals I contacted him about doing the cover art of our new album.

We wanted to have something related to space, but he was totally free to do whatever he felt like within that context. 

He did ask for some lyrics for inspiration, so I sent him the lyrics of the title track, and the finished result is his rendition of that. 

We are very pleased with how it came out. 💿 The new album is out via HIGH ROLLER RECORDS. Can you tell us somethin' about relationships with them? When we got close to finishing up the album we contacted High Roller and asked if they were interested in releasing it, as we were looking for a new label. 

High Roller has a lot of good releases that it would be an honor to be amongst, so they were the first label we contacted.

They were interested in having Flight, so that was it.
