MARC ZOLLA - PINK COCOON

💿 Hi, it’s a pleasure for us to have on Hardrockheavymetal MARC ZOLLA of PINK COCOON! Welcome!!

Hey Hardrockheavymetal, thx for having me here.

💿 Can you tell us somethin’about your early days? Which bands have influenced you and what’s the matter of the moniker of your project?

Pink Cocoon is not that old to be honest.

I don't know if there's any early days right now.

The first gig was April 21st 2017.

I recorded the Alienation EP 2 summers ago in studio and it has been taking off from there. Some influences include Sabbath, Hendrix, Frank Marino, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Nirvana, The Pretty Reckless, Blue Cheer.

My main influences will always be there but I'm listening to a lot of different music.

I've been currently listening to a Greta Van Fleet, Mac De Marco, Dopethrone, Death From Above 1979, The Police...... my influences or bands I listen to are all over the place. Each of these bands has something unique to offer when you analyze them.

As for the moniker or how the name "Pink Cocoon" came about.

I wanted something that sounded more cozy or complete opposite from a typical metal or rocknroll band name.

Something that would contrast with the music.

I'm into the colors pink and black as well.

I put the 2 words together and it sounded cool. Everyone has a different interpretation of what the name means, so I'll leave up to you to interpret it based on the music.

💿 PINK COCOON is actually a solo project with a revolving line-up. It will be possible in the future to have permanent members?

I guess it can be a called a solo project in a sense. It was not intended... I recorded the Alienation EP in studio and have been playing with my go to friends on bass and drums for the live experience.

A permanent band line-up is forsure possible and might be in the works.

We'll see what happens, haha.

💿 Your new EP “ALIENATION” is ready (available from April 25th, only digitally). Can you tell us somethin’ about its composition’s process? Are you satisfied about this platter? We were really impressed!

Yeah... the composition process is a bit weird. Most of the songs came about from playing guitar and writing the verse/ chorus parts.

I would then go on drums to play out the rhythm thinking of the song in my head. Id go back on guitar and finish up the whole song with vocal melodies.

Lyrics usually come last.

Then I'll add the bass part in last.

Most of the songs were composed in this manner.

I recorded at two studios in Montreal.

Drums was recorded first, then bass, then guitar would be added on top.

Vocals and overdubs (shaker, other vocals) would come in last.

I am indeed satisfied with it. I honestly didn't expect this much attention to the EP when I recorded and didn't really think it would get played on online radio stations along with certain FM/AM stations.

I reprinted another batch of CDs with a whole new layout design and such, so I assume people are into it.

With the new website, I can ship out international which is pretty cool.

I shipped some stuff to Germany, UK, United States...Pink Cocoon is still very much DIY.

💿 The real “news” in music industry is the return of vinyl. What’s your feeling about this classic format and the current music “business”?

I don't know if the real news in the music industry is the return of vinyl. I love vinyl. It allows the listener to sit down and fully engulf themselves into the whole album with minimal skipping through tracks.

There's more room for the visual artwork/ graphic design layout as well. It's a different experience completely.

Although I don't know if vinyl is going to stay or it is simply a fad at this point. Vinyl is an old technology just like CDs and Casettes.

The majority of people are into streaming services, downloading, making their own playlists and plugging that AUX cord in at the party...I see some bands giving out their whole release on USB sticks nowadays.

Newer vinyl releases often have digital download codes which is pretty cool! New music is always evolving as new technology is coming out... I still support vinyl and always will. I would love to release my current EP or future EP/ Album on vinyl at one point, although it is a more costly process... the wax release will come eventually.

I think underground bands are making money off ticket/door sales and physical clothing merch.

Clothing merch outsells physical music releases.

Also: If you record, mix, master your music digitally, through a computer... vinyl will not make it sound "better" out of nowhere.

Many say vinyl sounds better and how it is more "true to the sound" but that all depends how the music was actually processed, the skill level of the musicians and whether it was recorded analog or digital.

💿 The new EP is a self-release. A choice to be totally free?

The EP was originally released on a small short scale DIY CD release selling at gigs mostly.

It is now available for full stream on YouTube or website (for free) and a new batch of CDs are printed with a variant graphic design layout.

It is 6$ for a digital download or 10$ for physical CD. Shipping worldwide at www.pinkcocoonband.com.

💿 Can you tell us somethin’about your next live projects?

Pink Cocoon is currently my only live band project.

All my time and money goes into this project.

Although... concerning other live projects, I will be playing drums on tour for my sister's band Foolish, across Canada for 2 weeks from June 11th to June 24th.

💿 We love the cover of ALIENATION .. Who made it?

My friend Daniel Velichko took the picture. We did a photoshoot near a church and windmill close to where I live. It was like -30 Degrees Celcius during the winter when the photograph was taken. It was pretty intense hahah. I did some digital/ graphic design editing on the original image.
