BAND LETHEAN
ALBUM THE WATERS OF DEATH
LABEL CRUZ DEL SUR
OUT Nov 9th, 2018
OUR RATING 81/100
The 2012 creation of musician James Ashbey called Lethean, smart mix of epic metal, NWOBHM, now is ready with a full-lenght entitled "The Waters of Death" debut, out via CRUZ DEL SUR on November 9th. The result was a deeply-own sound rarely, forged after two demos followed, the first made in the U.K., the second in Athens, without the pleasure of physical outcome.
Finally, the band got the boost it needed when, in early 2017, vocalist and co-writer Thumri Paavana came aboard. A year later, Ashbey and Paavana entered the Seven Gates recording studio in Gothenburg, Sweden with producer Jamie Elton (ex-Amulet).
The album starts so epic and grandiloquent with “Idylls of the King,” features a myriad of styles and influences, with great melodies and classic riffing enhanced by brilliant vocals.
SEAFARER begins stronger and always classic turning to doom moments; there's space for a Maiden's runaway..great, maybe to increase solo parts.
IN DARKNESS VEILED starts with guitar and vocals as starring; maybe a song a step behind.
TIME AND THE GODS has more rhythm, with classic background but it sounds fresh.
ACROSS GREY WATERS hit us for its melody but it appears lightly sinister.
DEVOURING FIRE it's in our opinion the real ace of this platter, both complete and complex.
Accompanied by an atmospheric cover art courtesy of artist Stefan Bleyl, The Waters of Death is an album that details themes of decline, departure and the passage of time, enriched by diverse imagery drawn from mythology and literature.
