BAND BATTLEROAR
BAND CODEX EPICUS
LABEL CRUZ DEL SUR
OUT 2018, JUNE 15th
OUR RATING 85/100
“Codex Epicus”is a title that fits at its best for Battleroar, the well-known epic metal band from Greece on the road from almost 20 years. Known for studio albums packed with majestic riffs, soaring vocals, scorching leads and complex structures, Battleroar are now ready with the follow-up to 2014’s “Blood Of Legends”
It features as special guest a legend as guitarist/vocalist Mark Shelton of MANILLA ROAD on the song “Sword of the Flame”, reprising a role he first took on with “The Wanderer”, which appears on 2005’s “The Age of Chaos”.
The band is able to mantain an high level throughout the entire album and it isn't no small matter.
After a great intro, able to create the right environment, WE SHALL CONQUER, starts vigorious and with no frills, always in an epic backdrop. A top song, nothin'else to add.
On the same level SWORD OF THE FLAME, equally over 7 mins duration, that begins with an emphatic acoustic guitar intro; a track that grows second after second, and ends how it all started, the whole thing enhanced by an inspired solo.
CHRONICLES OF MIGHT is surely more a CLASSIC HM gem, so rich with chorus always at their best!
THE DOOM OF MEDUSA begins with some Maiden's drops but riffing becomes quickly full-bodied.
The song is complex and various and it's a real pleasure becoming overwhelmed by it.
PALACE OF THE MARTYRS goes on in the same way while KINGS OF HOLD starts in acoustic way, before developing in an evocative and poetic shot all to be enjoyed.
ENCHANTING THRENODY is lightly different, surely epic but with a different drummin', more pushed and with power metal influences.
A new version of STRONGHOLD, sawn on split 7 " single with OMEN, ends in the best way this great platter.
LASTLY
BATTLEROAR are back with personality and style; a band not less than epic metal masters!!
