With “When Northmen Die” Walter CROM Grosse release the 3rd album of his side project of Dark Fortress. Already since the debut „Vengeance“ from 2008 the albums have been released through Pure Steel/Legend and this tradition will continue with the new album. Calm, silent melodies go hand in hand with majestic guitar riffs, sweeping harmonies, clean, powerful vocals as well as an enthralling epicness. This album starts in epic mood with smarts choirs in BEHOLD THE LIGHTS, before ALL ALONE, almost 6 min duration with a great arpeggio before a powerful and lilting attack; a great tune maybe a bit repetitive.

SHIELDS OF GOLD begins in amazing way with a great arpeggio, an epic tune painted with many different hues.

DEAR FATHER is a real gem, rich of different nuances, melody and emphasis.

BETRAYAL breaks the blurred tone with more power and darker drops.

After I'M WITH YOU, GODS OF GLORY creates an environment of waiting before ONE STEP TO THE LAKE BELOW, more modern and darker, maybe "cinematic".

SENTENCED TO DEATH goes on  in modern way before RAIN which shows preference for melody and emphasis.

The title-track and FAREWELL SONG end this great return.
